Travellers fond of a big knees-up on New Year’s Eve could book a flight to Berlin for the city’s popular party at the Brandenburg Gate.

A familiar sight to those who watch the celebrations on television, this event draws more than one million eager visitors to Berlin every year for what is known in Germany as Silvester.

Crowds fill 80,000 sq ft of space around the gate to watch numerous celebrities, DJs and live music performances across four stages, as well as videos on eight large screens.

Party tents and hundreds of food and drink stalls are usually inundated with revellers throughout the night, while spectacular light, laser and fireworks displays take place between shows.

After midnight, visitors to Berlin can take part in a massive open-air disco, often continuing until well into the first morning of the new year.

Tourists could also take the opportunity to take in the city’s many attractions before and after Silvester, with the Winter World event at Potsdamer Platz and a number of exhibitions taking place throughout the festive season.
