Ingredients >
2 sticks (1 c.) butter, softened
1/2 c. shortening
1 1/2 c. sugar
3 jumbo eggs, divided use
1 T. vanilla extract
5 c. unbleached flour
2 t. baking powder
Pinch baking soda
Sesame seeds

Method >
With electric beaters, cream together butter and shortening. Beat in sugar and 2 of the eggs, plus the vanilla.
In another bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder and baking soda. Gradually beat 3 cups of flour mixture into egg mixture. Stir in last 2 cups of flour mixture. You may have to use hands to make sure dry mixture is fully absorbed, but do not overmix. Dough should be soft but not sticky.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Pinch off a piece of dough about the size of a walnut and roll with palms and fingers into a “pencil” about 5 inches long. Pick up the rope by the ends and quickly twist.
Place cookies 1 inch apart on an ungreased baking sheet. Whisk together the remaining egg with a little water and brush some of this mixture on each cookie. Sprinkle cookies with sesame seeds and bake about 15 minutes, or until cookies are lightly browned.
