Season Holidays in Russia

31st of December – 1 of January > New Year’s Day, which is the main holiday in Russia.

Everybody’s happy, people wish each other a better life in the new year and give each other presents. The alter ego for Santa Claus in Russia is Father Frost (Dyed Moroz). He arrives on New Year’s eve and gives presents. Traditionally people gather with family or friends to celebrate and make fireworks.

7th of January > Russian Orthodox Christmas. In Russia Christmas is celebrated not on 25th December like in Western countries, but on 7th January, following the Russian Orthodox tradition. It is celebrated less than the New Year.

Note > Russian Orthodox Church follows the Julian Calendar as opposed to the Gregorian Calendar followed by most of the Orthodox Churches.
