Christmas Traditions in Germany

Frohe Weihnachten und ein Glückliches Neues Jahr!

Food plays a big part of the Christmas celebration in Germany. In addition to the famous Christmas stollens, many different kinds of cookies are baked during the Christmas season. One of the more famous is “Lebkuchen” a type of gingerbread made popular by the city of Nürnberg. Another popular type of cookie is called “Ausstecherle” or cut-out cookies.

Besides enjoying the culinary delights of the Christmas season, Germans enjoy going to the Christkindelmarkt or Christmas market. Beginning in November these famous outdoor markets are usually set up in the center of the town. In the market there are a variety of items to be purchased including beautiful hand carved wooden nativity scenes, the most famous of which can be found at the market in Oberammergau in Bavaria. At night the market is lit up with thousands of lights and can be seen from a far.
