Christmas Traditions in Nicaragua

Very early in the morning, the adults go to the market and buy the food they will be preparing for the Christmas dinner. This is either turkey or stuffed chicken and fruits.

In the meantime, the children write letters to Papa Noel asking him to bring them the toys they want to receive at midnight on December 24th. Papa Noel will leave the toys under the Christmas tree that the whole family decorates during the Christmas celebration or he may also leave the toys on the pillows while the children sleep.

In small towns there are old traditions where the Catholic Church prepares a parade or procession. The priest goes around the town with an endless number of Biblical characters who are imitating the birth, passion and life of Jesus Christ. There are also people dressed up as Kings, Romans and Jesus’ Apostles. Most people view this procession with great devotion.
