Ingredients >
2 glasses oil
2 glasses shortening
2 glasses icing sugar
1 glass orange juice
1 tsp each ground cloves and cinnamon
1 tbsp bicarbonate of soda
1 tbsp baking powder
1 ½ kg plain flour
walnut pieces and ground
for honey syrup > water, sugar, honey, lemon juice

Method >
Preheat oven to 180C. Butter and line oven trays. Beat oil, shortening and sugar in the mixer. Add the orange juice and beat to incorporate well.
Fold in flour, spices, bicarbonate of soda and baking powder and mix to a soft dough. Mould into medium sized long sausages, flatten with your palm and insert a walnut piece; fold dough around, shape and place onto trays.
Bake in the oven until golden in colour. Dip in cold syrup and roll in ground walnuts. Makes 100.
