The sponge docks of Tarpon Springs attract hundreds of visitors every year. The city is also known for its large Greek population, which holds strongly to tradition.

Today,  thousands are expected here to attend the 101st Epiphany celebration. This morning,  hundreds attended the Orthos service at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral. Just after noon is the Traditional Procession with the Clergy, followed by the  blessing of the waters  and release of the dove.

Then about 50 boys ages 16-18 dive into Spring Bayou, to retrieve the coveted wooden cross tossed into the water.

The day-long religious event commemorates Jesus’ baptism in the River Jordan, and is known around the world. According to tradition, the retriever of the cross is blessed for a lifetime.
